Building Strong Foundations for Children: A Decade of Learning and Resourcefulness

It couldn’t have been a better day to host our learning workshop. Reflecting on ThinkZone’s 10-year journey, one truth resonates deeply: impactful change doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s the result of collective efforts, resourceful innovation, and the courage to challenge systemic barriers.

As a bootstrapped social enterprise, we’ve always been conscious of spending—some might call it stingy; I’d call it resourceful. The classic Indian philosophy of getting the “bang for the buck” has guided us in making the best out of the least. This philosophy shaped the workshop: a one-day event, thoughtfully designed to bring together diverse voices, all united by a shared mission to advance foundational skills for children and provide quality learning opportunities.

Rather than just celebrating a milestone, we set out to create a space for meaningful dialogue. The result? A vibrant exchange of ideas, practical takeaways, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Why This Workshop Was Unique

When my team and I discussed the idea, we knew this couldn’t just be about marking an anniversary. We wanted to engage people at every level of the education ecosystem: government leaders, philanthropic organizations, corporations, affordable private schools, youth volunteers, and community educators.

This diversity made the workshop unique, allowing us to bridge gaps and find common ground. For many attendees—government officials and youth volunteers alike—it was the first time they’d been part of such a two-way dialogue.

Key Highlights: Insights from the Sessions

1. Government Leaders: A Vision for Viksit Odisha @2036

During the session “Foundational Skills for Children’s Future Success,” government school leaders emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between social organizations and grassroots implementers like teachers and CRCCs. They also highlighted the critical role of parents in shaping children’s learning journeys.

2. Philanthropy and Corporations: Scaling Solutions Together

The session “Ending Learning Poverty” explored challenges in scaling programs. The discussions reinforced the importance of balancing advanced solutions like AI with accessible tools like WhatsApp, YouTube or television to achieve sustainable impact at scale.

3. Youth Volunteers: Driving Grassroots Transformation

Hearing youth volunteers share their stories during the session “Driving Foundational Skill Development” was especially inspiring. Their creativity in mobilizing communities and engaging parents showcased the potential of grassroots innovation to drive systemic change.

4. Affordable Private Schools: Unlocking Untapped Potential

In the discussion “Achieving Foundational Literacy and Numeracy for All Children,” affordable private schools stood out as vital contributors to education reform. Despite resource constraints, their resilience and innovative practices highlighted their growing significance in shaping children’s foundational skills.

Lessons for the Future

This workshop wasn’t just a celebration; it was a masterclass in learning and reflection. Here are the key lessons we’re carrying forward:

  1. Listen and Act on Feedback from the Ground: Government leaders and CRCCs emphasized that programs designed in isolation often fall short. Incorporating grassroots feedback is essential to making initiatives effective and sustainable.
  2. Youth are the Unsung Heroes of Change: Youth volunteers demonstrated extraordinary passion and innovation. Investing in their capacity building will amplify their efforts to drive transformation at the community level.
  3. Affordable Private Schools Are Vital Players: The growing role of affordable private schools cannot be overlooked. Supporting them through targeted interventions—whether teacher training or scalable tech solutions—can create ripple effects across the education landscape.
  4. Balancing Innovation with Simplicity is Key: While tools like AI are promising, accessible solutions like WhatsApp and Youtube-based learning continue to play a significant role in creating large-scale impact.
  5. Collaboration is the Foundation for Progress: This workshop reinforced the power of bringing diverse stakeholders together. It’s not just about sharing ideas; it’s about working in tandem to create solutions that are practical and scalable.
