There are some parts of rural Odisha which has a majority of migrant population. Hence, there is diversity in language they speak, their food habits, culture etc. Raghab is a student who is enrolled in our learning enhancement program and lives in a Bengali prevalent migrant community but in his school, everybody communicates and learns in Odia language. As a result, most children from his community struggle to adapt to the school language. Like other children, Raghab also struggles with speaking, reading and writing in Odia at school. But learning mathematics is not much of a struggle for him so he is good at mathematics.
To help Raghab and others learn Odia, our educator Rasmita employed a variety of approaches, such as picture cards, stories, videos, and audio. In time Raghav started communicating in Odia with his peers and teachers and gradually became fluent in speaking and writing. His mother says, “Raghab was unable to speak fluently in Odia. But now he speaks better Odia than me, and also teaches me Odia”.
